Course Overview

This advanced 2-day live virtual course will explore the most current and clinically relevant advances in veterinary nephrology and urology. Sessions will integrate recent research with practical applications in chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, and lower urinary tract disorders. Topics include FGF-23 and phosphate management, renal biomarkers, microbiome, regenerative medicine, and interventional urology. Interactive panel discussions will allow participants to engage directly with internationally recognized experts and translate cutting-edge insights into practice.

Agenda

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply current evidence on FGF-23, phosphate balance, and nutritional strategies to manage and slow CKD progression.
  2. Incorporate novel biomarkers such as cystatin B to improve early detection and monitoring of AKI.
  3. Evaluate therapeutic applications of regenerative medicine, hemoperfusion, and plasma exchange in renal and immune-mediated diseases.
  4. Update diagnostic and treatment approaches for sporadic UTIs and recurrent UTIs within an antimicrobial stewardship framework.
  5. Update diagnostic and treatment approaches for feline idiopathic cystitis.
  6. Implement best practices for SUB placement, maintenance, and client counseling in feline urolithiasis and obstruction.

Dr. Mark Acierno received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Mississippi State University, followed by an internship in small animal medicine and surgery. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Tufts University. With a passion for advancing veterinary nephrology, Dr. Acierno spent 12 years at Louisiana State University, where he developed one of the world's most advanced nephrology programs. Currently, he is a professor at Midwestern University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and serves as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. His clinical and research interests include hypertension, kidney disease, and renal replacement therapies. He is the author of 54 peer reviewed publications in the scientific literature and more than 20 book chapters. 

In addition to his veterinary expertise, Dr. Acierno holds an MBA from Pace University in New York City and has a background in business and finance, which formed the basis of his interest in personal finance for veterinary professionals. He lives in Madison, WI, with his wife Alyssa and their diverse menagerie of furred, feathered, and scaled friends. Dr. Acierno splits his time between his home and Midwestern University. Outside of his professional endeavors, he enjoys scuba diving, climbing, hiking, and exploring the Sonoran Desert. Dr. Acierno is dedicated to sharing his extensive knowledge and experience, making a significant impact on the field of veterinary medicine.

Dr. Byers is a board-certified veterinary emergency/critical care and small animal internal medicine specialist, as well as a certified veterinary journalist, based in Omaha, Nebraska. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University and is the Co-Editor of three ECC textbooks with an additional SAIM textbook currently in development. He has also published chapters and articles in numerous textbooks and journals. Dr. Byers is a renowned international speaker, and his clinical areas of interest are hematology, fluid therapy, and endocrinology.

Dr. Byron is a 1998 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and completed a residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine in 2004 at OSU. She was on faculty at University of Illinois before returning to OSU in 2011. Her primary interest is lower urinary tract disorders on dogs and cats, particularly incontinence and cystoscopic interventions. She has published several studies on these topics and numerous book chapters and reviews.

Jonathan Elliott is Professor in Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology at the Royal Veterinary College. A Cambridge Graduate, his PhD was in vascular pharmacology. He joined the RVC in 1990 and developed research interests in feline kidney disease, hypertension and equine laminitis. He has published 260 peer-reviewed articles and supervised 40 PhD students to completion. He is the recipient of the Pfizer Academic (1998), BSAVA Amoroso Award (2001), Petplan Charitable Trust Award (2005), ESVNU Scientific Award (2007) and BSAVA Woodrow Award (2019). He is a founding member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology and a Fellow of the British Pharmacological Society.

Dr. Foster completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Wisconsin and later became a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology and the American College of Veterinary Nephrology-Urology. After several years in academia, he now runs the Nephrology & Urology and Extracorporeal Therapies services at Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, DC. Dr. Foster’s research interests include nontraditional uses of extracorporeal blood purification, glomerulonephritis, and drug pharmacokinetics in patients with kidney disease. He has lectured internationally on these subjects and has published numerous manuscripts and book chapters in nephrology and urology. He is a past-president of the American Society of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology, a current board member of the International Renal Interest Society, and the President-elect and founding member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology.

Dr. Francey is a graduate of the University of Bern (Switzerland). He completed a residency in small animal internal medicine (University of Bern and LSU) and is a Diplomate of ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ and ECVIM-CA.  Dr. Francey has a fellowship in Nephrology and Hemodialysis and Lecturer in small animal internal medicine and nephrology (University of California Davis, USA). He is currently Lecturer and Head of small animal nephrology/urology (Vetsuisse Faculty University of Bern) and is in the teaching faculty of the Hemodialysis Academy, providing on-line training in blood purification techniques. Dr. Francey is a founding Member and Diplomate of ACVNU.

Dr. Langston received her DVM degree from Louisiana State University, completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at The Animal Medical Center, and a fellowship in Renal Medicine and Hemodialysis at the University of California, Davis.  She was a staff internist at AMC until 2014, then moved to The Ohio State University where she is currently a professor – clinical.  She became a diplomate of The American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology in 2026. Her current clinical interests include extracorporeal therapies, complications of hemodialysis, treatment of chronic kidney disease, and treatment of anemia of chronic kidney disease.

Valerie Parker
Valerie Parker, DVM, DºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ (SAIM and Nutrition)

Dr. Parker is Clinical Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine and Nutrition at The Ohio State University. She received her DVM from Tufts University, followed by a small animal internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. She then completed a small animal internal medicine residency at Iowa State University and a nutrition residency at Tufts University. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SAIM and Nutrition). Dr. Parker’s primary areas of interest include gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease, obesity management, and vitamin D metabolism, as well as nutritional management of a variety of canine and feline diseases.

Jessica M. Quimby DVM, PhD, DºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ (SAIM)

Dr. Quimby is board certified in small animal internal medicine and completed a PhD studying feline CKD and was on faculty at Colorado State University until 2017. She is now a professor of small animal internal medicine at the Ohio State University. Current research areas include the study of renal pathophysiology, novel treatment strategies and evidence-based supportive care strategies. She has an interest in feline clinical pharmacology focusing on improving supportive care and quality of life in cats with CKD. Dr. Quimby has received the International Renal Interest Society Award and the AVMF/Winn Feline Foundation Research Award for her contributions to nephrology and feline medicine. In 2021 she was selected to serve on the IRIS board.

Dr. Segev is Lecturer of Veterinary Medicine and Head, Department of Small Animal Internal Medicine; Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Dr. Segev has actively focused his clinical interests and research in nephrology and has established a hemodialysis program at the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine in Israel. He established a novel scoring system which effectively predicts the probability for survival in dogs treated with renal replacement therapy for the management of acute kidney failure. He has also described some of the challenges and complications faced with the long-term management of dogs with advanced chronic kidney disease including the hyperkalemia associated with the use of therapeutic renal diets and aluminum toxicity in the management of the hyperphosphatemia of CKD.

Dr. Weisse completed his small animal surgical residency training at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2002 and then pursued advanced training through a customized fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the (human) Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 2003.  He held dual appointments in surgery and radiology as an Assistant Professor at both the veterinary and human hospitals, respectively (Univ. of Pennsylvania) before coming to the Animal Medical Center in New York City in 2009 as staff surgeon and Director of Interventional Radiology Services.  Educational interests include expanding minimally-invasive veterinary interventional radiology (IR) techniques through describing new procedures and training veterinarians.  Research interests include IR techniques for non-resectable and metastatic cancers, palliative stenting for malignant obstructions, endourology, vascular anomalies such as portosystemic shunts and AVMs, and stenting for tracheal collapse.

Dr.  Wood is a Clinical Associate Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a diplomate of both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Wood has a PhD in Immunology where he studies the role of interleukin-6 during the acute phase response to urinary tract infection. His research focuses on utilizing the mucosal response to infection to develop non-antibiotic preventative therapies for managing recurrent UTI.
