Course Overview

This course gives all clinicians, from a wide range of specialties including nutritionists, internists, criticalists, cardiologists, immunologists, and behaviorists the unique opportunity to deep dive into specific nutrients to enable a more thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of each across a range of diseases. Course content will be delivered by experts in the field and will include cross-specialty perspectives on the role of tryptophan, magnesium, vitamin D and thiamine in a range of diseases. Agenda

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  1. Through individual lectures, understand the key nutritional features of tryptophan, magnesium, vitamin D and thiamine from the nutritionist鈥檚 perspective.
  2. Through individual lectures, understand the pathophysiology, role and therapeutic effect of tryptophan, magnesium, vitamin D and thiamine in different diseases from various specialty perspectives.
  3. Through panel discussions recognize the role and impact tryptophan, magnesium, vitamin D and thiamine play across specialties and therefore the importance of cross-collaboration in the management of these cases.

Dr. Kathrani graduated from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 2006, before completing her rotating small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, RVC, in 2007 and her PhD in canine inflammatory bowel disease at the RVC in 2011. Dr. Kathrani then completed a three-year residency program in small animal internal medicine at Cornell University in 2014 and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SAIM). She also completed a two-year small animal clinical nutrition residency program at the University of California-Davis in 2016. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Nutrition). Dr. Kathrani is currently an Associate Professor of Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine & Nutrition at the RVC.

Dr. Barko earned his undergraduate and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degrees from Washington State University in 2013. He subsequently completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery and a residency in small animal internal medicine at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. In 2024 he earned a PhD from the University of Illinois Department of Pathobiology with a focus on investigating host-microbiome interactions in dogs and cats. His current research is focused on the associations between microbial amino acid derivatives, especially those of tryptophan, and chronic enteropathies in dogs and cats, as well as the impact of these metabolites on intestinal mucosa, immune responses and barrier function.

Dr. Bergman has been a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists since 2003, one of less than 100 people to hold this distinguished title. Dr. Bergman was in California as the Behavior Service Coordinator for the University of California Veterinary Medical Center-San Diego, where in addition to treating behavior problems in companion dogs, cats and birds, she consulted for local zoos and animal shelters, was involved in a variety of clinical research projects and trained residents and veterinary students. In 2008 Dr. Bergman returned to Pennsylvania to start a behavior service. She is a consultant for VIN.

Dr. Cole graduated from Cambridge University, UK in 2011 and worked in small animal practice prior to completing a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). She finished her Emergency and Critical Care residency at the RVC in June 2019 and she gained the American Diploma in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care shortly after. She is currently a lecturer in Emergency and Critical Care at the Royal Veterinary College. She has a particular interest in the nutrition in critical care, acute kidney injury and point-of-care ultrasound and POCUS education. She has lectured both in the UK and overseas on a variety of topics and is the chair of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound Interest Group, EVECC.

Dr. Geddes is a Senior Lecturer in Small Animal Internal Medicine at the Royal Veterinary College in the UK. She has a PhD entitled 鈥淐alcium and phosphate homeostasis in feline chronic kidney disease鈥. Dr. Geddes is boarded in both Small Animal Internal Medicine and in Veterinary Nephrology and Urology, and she is an RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine.

Dr. Greensmith graduated from the RVC in 2010 and, after a one-year internship at Langford Veterinary Services and four years in a busy emergency service in Cardiff, came back to the RVC before completing his residency and becoming a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in 2018. He joined the faculty of the RVC the same year and became a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical care and an RCVS recognised specialist in 2021, as well as gaining his FHEA status the same year.

Dr. Heilmann completed her small animal internal medicine residency and PhD in Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University. She is a Diplomate of the 黑料正能量 and ECVIM, and a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. She currently serves as a professor of small animal internal medicine at the University of Leipzig in Germany.

Dr. Jablonski earned her DVM and PhD from Colorado State University, where she also completed a small animal internal medicine residency. Dr. Jablonski's research efforts are dedicated toward improving the quality of life and outcomes of dogs with protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) syndrome. Her interest is in the genetic basis, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of canine PLE.

Dr. Jaffey is a board-certified small animal internist and Associate Professor at the Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine. In a professional setting, Dr. Jaffey loves teaching veterinary students, performing research, and seeing patients. His research interests include the following areas hepatobiliary, endocrinology, respiratory tract, infectious diseases, immunologic effects of vitamin D, and several hereditary disorders such as cytochrome b5 reductase deficiency and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. He has > 70 journal article publications and authored book chapters in several reference textbooks including Ettinger鈥檚 Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Small Animal Gastroenterology, and Clinical Veterinary Advisor. He also lectures nationally and internationally on various topics related to small animal internal medicine.

Dr. Larsen is a board-certified veterinary nutritionist with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and has a PhD in Nutritional Biology. She serves as Chief of Service for the Nutrition Support service in the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, providing clinical nutritional consulting. She is Scientific Director of the Amino Acid Laboratory, which offers nutritional testing for research studies and for clinical patients around the world. She also mentors residents and students and teaches in the veterinary curriculum as well as for the Graduate Group of Nutritional Biology.

Dr. Murphy earned dual Bachelor's degrees in Animal Sciences and Biological Sciences from Rutgers University and a DVM from Iowa State University. She completed a rotating internship in New York City, followed by a clinical nutrition residency and PhD at the University of Tennessee, focusing on energy metabolism and satiety in dogs. Dr. Murphy worked as a clinical nutritionist at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in New Jersey before returning to UT as Chief of the Veterinary Nutrition Service in 2016. Her interests include obesity prevention and treatment as well as dietary management of gastrointestinal disease.

Natasha Olby completed her veterinary degree at Cambridge University, UK in 1991. After a brief period spent in mixed general practice, she returned to Cambridge to complete a PhD and post-doctoral fellowship in spinal cord injury. She moved to North Carolina State University to do a neurology and neurosurgery residency and has stayed on the faculty at NCSU. She is currently a Professor of Neurology/Neurosurgery and holds the Dr. Kady M. Gjessing and Rhanna M. Davidson Distinguished Chair in Gerontology. She runs the Canine Neuro-Aging Program and is the Director of the Center for Healthy Aging at NCSU.

Dr. Parker is Clinical Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine and Nutrition at The Ohio State University. She received her DVM from Tufts University, followed by a small animal internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York City. She then completed a small animal internal medicine residency at Iowa State University and a nutrition residency at Tufts University. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SAIM and Nutrition). Dr. Parker鈥檚 primary areas of interest include gastrointestinal disease, kidney disease, obesity management, and vitamin D metabolism, as well as nutritional management of a variety of canine and feline diseases.

Dr. Pa脽lack worked as a research assistant at Freie Universit盲t Berlin and as a professor at Justus-Liebig-University Giessen, Germany. Dr. Pa脽lack is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition and a German Veterinary Specialist in Animal Nutrition and Dietetics. Her main research interests include the effects of nutrition on the immune function, intestinal microbiota, and urine composition in different animal species, with a particular focus on dogs and cats.

Dr. Summers is a board-certified specialist in small animal internal medicine and assistant professor at Oregon State University. She completed a residency and a Ph.D. at Colorado State University. Her Ph.D. work was on novel etiologies and the role of the gut microbiome in cats with chronic kidney disease. Her current research focus is on the gut microbiome as a therapeutic target in chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Wolf is a clinical assistant professor and co-service chief of emergency and critical care at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in religion from the George Washington University and his DVM from Cornell University. He completed a rotating internship and ECC residency at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include CPR, antimicrobial therapy, and biomarker evaluation.
